Momentum Muse: Values (#12)
Feeling torn and out of alignment? Maybe your values have been challenged!
Hello and welcome to Momentum Muse.
I’m so glad you’re taking the time to connect with yourself and identify your priorities and intentions.
Be kind to yourself as you work through these question and only take as much as is helpful for you.
My core value is compassion and it was the main driver behind my sadness last week. It’s hard for me to grasp how millions of people don’t seem to share the same sense of compassion for one another. Today in quest, we’ll explore what happens when our values are challenged.
Today, as every week:
Waypoint: want went well last week, what didn’t, and what ideas do you want to take forward? (5-10 minutes)
Pathfinder: intentions, priorities, GROW, and PINCH (15-20 minutes)
Quest: deeper reflection (up to 30 minutes)
Momentum Muse Zoom Sessions:
Join me on Mondays (at varying times each week to support my schedule and different time zones) for a 30 minute co-working session. Click here to save your spot and add it to your calendar: https://tidycal.com/hannakeiner/momentum-muse-body-doubling
What went well last week?
What didn’t go so well?
What are your ideas for next week?
This can include things you want to try differently, or things that you want to continue doing because they’re working well. Once you have a list, select one or two items to commit to.
What are you particularly proud of handling well?
What are your top 3 priorities for this week? (the What)
What are your intentions for this week? (the How)
Intentions could be: do less, focus, do one hard thing, be kind to myself, lower expectations at home to focus on work, connect with others, challenge myself, etc.
Optional Pathfinder A: Increase your chances of success by using the GROW model to get clear on your goal and next steps.
Last week, I introduced you to a new coaching framework. Let’s use it again today. The GROW model includes four stages: Goal setting (G), an assessment of the current reality (R), an exploration of options (O), and identifying the way forward (W).
What is your goal?
What do you want? Complete this sentence: “I want to….”
What is important about this goal right now?
What does your reality look like?
How do you feel about this?
What internal resistance do you have to taking action?
What resources do you have?
What are your options?
What ideas do you have?
What has worked in the past?
Who could help you with this?
What will you do?
What is your first step?
What might happen to prevent you from taking this action?
What can you do to support yourself?
Optional Pathfinder B: PINCH (ADHD Motivators)
“PINCH” - Work with ADHD motivators. For your priorities, how can you use your interest-based nervous system to motivate you? Brainstorm some ideas to incorporate passion/play, interest, novelty, competition/cooperation/challenge, and hurry.
Passion and Play - How can I turn this into a game or make it fun?
Interest - How can I connect this to my interests?
Novelty - How can I infuse some novelty into this so it sparkles?
Competition / Cooperation / Challenge - How can I turn this into cooperation or a friendly competition (with myself or others)?
Hurry - How can I create a sense of urgency?
Values are principles that guide our actions, decisions, and sense of right and wrong. They reflect what we consider important in life, influencing everything from our relationships and career choices to how we interact with our communities and approach the world around us.
When our values are challenged, it can feel unsettling. This might happen in a conflict where someone treats others unfairly, in an environment that doesn’t prioritize honesty, or in a situation that pressures us to act in ways that don’t feel authentic.
When values are challenged, we often experience emotional and mental friction. This friction can take the form of anger, frustration, anxiety, or even doubt, prompting a deep sense of being torn or out of alignment. Our body and mind sense that something is "off," making us pause and consider how best to respond. Sometimes, it requires courage to stand up for our values, even if it’s uncomfortable, because our response defines the strength of those values.
Facing values-based challenges can strengthen our connection to those values, deepen our self-awareness, and reinforce our commitment to living in alignment with who we truly are.
Exploring Values:
What are your core values? If you don’t know what your values are, you can start by identifying two words from this list: https://brenebrown.com/resources/dare-to-lead-list-of-values/
Which of your values felt challenged last week, and how did you respond?
What are you noticing about the events from last week when looking at them through this lens of values?
How do you want your values to guide you in moments of struggle or uncertainty?
What are some small, meaningful ways you can align your actions with my values in my daily life?
